Planning applications on hold - Nutrient pollution. On advice from Natural England and the government’s chief planner about nutrient pollution, planning applications for development within the River Tees catchment have been placed on hold.

Applications that could increase nitrogen discharge into the internationally important Teesmouth and Cleveland Coast Special Protection Area cannot be approved as they would breach the Habitat Regulations. The applications placed on hold include all types of proposals for new residential development and tourism accommodation. Applications for all other types of development are dealt with on a case-by-case basis. Applications for householder development can still be approved.

The advice from Natural England applies to all Local Authorities in the River Tees catchment.

You can find out more information on Nutrient pollution: reducing the impact on protected sites on the government's website.
