Strategic housing and economic land availability assessment

The strategic housing and economic land availability assessment (SHELAA) is a technical study produced to identify a future supply of land which is available, suitable and achievable for housing or economic development.

The assessment is used to inform the preparation of the local plan and the identification of a five year supply of housing land. The SHELAA does not allocate land for development; this is done through the preparation of a local plan or through neighbourhood planning.

The sites assessed in the SHELAA have been submitted to the council for consideration, mainly by landowners or their agents.

We have published our Strategic Housing and Economic Land Availability Assessment (SHELAA) and want to know your views.

The document contains details and maps of the sites submitted for consideration alongside an assessment of the availability, suitability and achievability of each site for future housing or economic development. It also describes the methodology used for assessments and includes an indicative housing trajectory.

We are holding a six week consultation on the SHELAA between 11 November and 23 December 2016. We want to know your views on the sites within and whether any should or should not be allocated for development in the new local plan.

January 2016: SHELAA initial sites list

We have published an initial list of the sites that will be included in our Strategic Housing and Economic Land Availability Assessment (SHELAA) when it is published later this year.

The document lists the sites submitted to the council for consideration as part of preparing the local plan, includes maps of settlements where land has been suggested and provides some brief information about each site (such as the proposed use for the site) but does not assess sites.

The initial sites list has been published for information only.

2014: Call for sites

We have begun a 'call for sites' to gain a better understanding of the availability, suitability and the likely economic viability of potential sites that could contribute to meeting the identified need for housing and economic land over the period to 2035. This information will be used to inform the development of our new local plan.
