Watch Charlie Lou and Joe’s stories
A new campaign is underway to encourage more businesses to offer supported internships and for mainstream schools to help students sign up for career-launching opportunities in North Yorkshire.
The initiative provides young people aged 16 to 24 who have education, health and care plans the chance to gain workplace experience while receiving tailored support, with an average of 64 per cent moving into employment.
The unpaid work placements involve spending three days a week in a real job while attending one day in learning to develop additional skills.
With full support provided to employers at no extra cost, the supported internships offer a practical, risk-free way to nurture talent.
Our assistant director for inclusion, Amanda Newbold said: “Supported internships provide a life-changing opportunity for young people with additional needs to gain workplace experience and build confidence.
“Seeing success stories like Charlie-Lou and Joe secure employment after their internships proves just how valuable these programmes are, not only for interns themselves, but also for the businesses that benefit from their skills and dedication.
“We would encourage more employers and schools to get involved to help even more young people take their first steps towards meaningful careers.”
