For eight-year-old Taylor Moon, staying active is not just about having fun – it is essential for her mental health and wellbeing.

Taylor, who has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), thrives on movement and structure. During the school holidays, the FEAST programme has provided her with the chance to take part in high-energy sports sessions at Kanga, a local activity provider in Skipton.

Taylor’s mother, Julie Moon, said the programme has been a lifeline.

She said: “We’re an active family, but when we can’t get out and about, it has a real knock-on effect on Taylor. At Kanga she has the chance to move, her brain can relax, and it helps her process her internal feelings.”

Now families like the Moons have welcomed the news that FEAST will continue for at least another year following the Government’s extension of the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme for 2025.

FEAST which is coordinated by North Yorkshire Together and commissioned by us through Department for Education funding, provides free school holiday activities and nutritious meals for children on benefits-related free school meals.

The programme will run throughout the Easter, summer and Christmas holidays, giving children the opportunity to take part in enriching experiences, make new friends and develop social skills.

Our executive member for corporate services, Cllr Heather Phillips said:” We are delighted that the Department for Education has extended the Holiday Activities and Food Programme for another year.

“It is truly vital for those who need it most. FEAST is an essential resource ensuring that young people in North Yorkshire like Taylor can access enriching activities that support their development, health and happiness.”

Now in its fifth year, FEAST has delivered more than 100,000 free activity sessions across the county. With over 50 locations offering everything from sports and art to interactive experiences, the programme continues to make a difference to families facing financial pressures.<

Taylor’s mother added: “Kanga in Skipton is perfect for Taylor, as she really loves sport. Unfortunately I cannot afford the sessions but thanks to the FEAST vouchers, I can book a place for he during the holidays.”

The strategic director of FEAST, Max May said: “We believe that every child should have the opportunities to enjoy the holidays, stay active and connect with others in a safe and supportive environment. Taylor’s story is just one example of how FEAST is helping people to thrive, not just during the holidays but in the long term.”
