One of the great assets within the borough of Harrogate is its fine inheritance of historic towns and villages.

Listed buildings are buildings which are considered to have special architectural or historic interest.

Historic battlefields

Historic England's register of 46 historic battlefields includes three which lie wholly or partly in the Harrogate district.

Scheduled monuments

These features range from the magnificent ruins of the Cistercian Fountains Abbey to simple cup and ring marked rocks on the Nidderdale moors.

The district's landscape is rich and varied, from the apparent wilderness of the high heather moor and intensively cultivated farmland, to the natural beauty of woods and water and carefully tended gardens and historic parks.

Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is situated on the eastern flanks of the Yorkshire Dales, from the high moorland of Great Whernside at the top of Nidderdale south and east towards the Vale of York.
