You could be entitled to Pension Credit if you are over state pension age and on a low income. Not everyone who qualifies for Pension Credit is currently claiming it, so there are lots of people missing out. As well as extra money every week to help with living costs, people who qualify for Pension Credit can get other benefits like help to pay for NHS dental treatment, vouchers for glasses or contact lenses and a free TV licence if they are over 75.
Anyone who qualifies for Pension Credit will also get a Winter Fuel Payment for winter 2024 to 2025, but new applications must be made to the Department for Work and Pensions by 21 December 2024. It can take more than eight weeks to process new Pension Credit claims, but as long as you apply by 21 December and your claim is successful you will get a Winter Fuel Payment.
Find out about the Winter Fuel Payment on the government website
People can also call the Pension Service helpline for free on 0800 99 1234.
There are organisations such as Age UK, Independent Age and North Yorkshire Citizen’s Advice and Law Centre can offer support to people who need help understanding the eligibility criteria or application process.
