Your guide to events that are taking place across the county
As the seasons change with the approaching spring months, we can look forward to getting out and about in North Yorkshire.
There is plenty going on across the county, both indoors and outdoors, so whatever your passion there should be something to pique your interest.
We can’t include everything here, so be sure to keep a look out for local events where you live, too.

Join the Yorkshire Dales National Park and North York Moors National Park to celebrate the beauty of the night skies and the tenth Anniversary of the Dark Skies Festival.
Space scientist and broadcaster Dame Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock MBE launched the event with a special talk at Sneaton Castle in Whitby.

Temperance versus the demon drink is a free exhibition at the North Yorkshire County Record Office in Northallerton.
The exhibition showcases a selection of records from archive collections relating to the drinking of alcohol and the rise of the temperance movement.
It can be viewed from Tuesday to Friday, 9.30am to 4pm. There is no need to book.

Look, Look Again! Is an exhibition of mid-century British art from North Yorkshire Council’s Art Collections and Goldmark Gallery.
The Mercer Gallery in Harrogate has teamed up with the Craven Museum in Skipton and Goldmark, one of the UK’s leading commercial galleries to stage this major new exhibition exploring a fascinating period of mid-20th century British Art from the neo-Romantics to the explosion of creativity unleashed by the end of World War II.

Comedian, presenter, actor and author Russell Kane will be performing at the Scarborough Spa in the resort’s South Bay.

A Night at the Movies is the theme at Selby Abbey where the timeless melodies of film scores will be brought to life by the Ebor String Quartet and accompanied on selected songs by the stirring vocals of Alistair Griffin.
With music from Star Wars, Pirates of The Caribbean, Jurassic Park, ET, Notting Hill and Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the musicians will take the audience on a musical journey of iconic movie soundtracks.

‘Langcliffe Quarry – A History of the Limeworks Industry’ is an initiative to enhance the nationally significant site into a unique destination and improve accessibility.
To celebrate the project, we are hosting a series of events, including guided walks, art exhibitions, and family-friendly educational activities.
These activities are all free, with events suitable for all ages.
At 1pm, an informative walk around the Spencer, Hoffmann, and Triple Draw kilns at Langcliffe Quarry is being held with landscape archaeologist, Dr David Johnson.
The walks will last roughly three hours and the terrain is difficult, including uneven ground and steep inclines.

Bolton Castle, near Leyburn, is hosting a Living History Tudor Weekend.
Tudor England was a time of great change. Castle Howard’s ‘Living Historians’ will show you how life would have differed between 1485, the beginning of the reign of King Henry VII, and 1603 with the death of Henry’s granddaughter, the last Tudor monarch, Elizabeth I.
The event, which runs from 10am to 5pm, is included with general admission.

The Milton Rooms is Malton's arts, entertainment and community hub.
It is the venue for Let’s Dance, a national campaign to inspire everyone in the UK to embrace dance as a way of improving their health, connect with others and have fun.

Whitby Restaurant Week runs from Monday, 3 March, to Sunday, 9 March. Restaurants, cafes and pubs across Whitby are offering set-price dining for just £10, £15, £20 or £30.
It's a perfect opportunity to try somewhere new or revisit an old Whitby favourite with friends and family.

4 March
Thirsk Ladies Cycle group will meet at Coffee at Number 10, Millgate, Thirsk YO7 1AA.
The group goes at the pace of the slowest rider and their aim is to build confidence in cycling while also providing opportunities for social riding, for ladies with a range of abilities.
They meet on the first Tuesday of every month. The ride starts at 9.45am and they aim to return by 2pm. For more details, visit the Cycling UK website.
Skipton Town Hall is hosting a winter tea dance between 1.30pm and 3pm.
Visitors will be entertained by Blackpool Tower resident organist, John Bowdler.
Tickets include sweet treats and unlimited tea and coffee.

Scarborough's annual Pancake Day Races are being held in the town centre followed by local schools heading to South Bay to take part in the traditional skipping spectacular.
In line with tradition in Scarborough, Pancake Day kicks off with the town crier introducing the mayor, who then rings the pancake bell on North Street at 12pm.
Everyone then heads down to Foreshore Road on Scarborough's South Bay for the tradition of skipping by the seaside.

4 to 22 March
Rural Arts in Westgate, Thirsk, are holding an exhibition entitled The Idea of the North until 22 March.
Artists from North Yorkshire have responded to author Peter Davidson's idea that "everyone carries their own idea of North within them", using a range of media and styles.
The free exhibition is organised by North Yorkshire Open Studios (NYOS)
Rural Arts opens from Tuesday to Saturday between 10am and 4pm.

The Talent Troop is taking over the Helmsley Art Centre stage for an annual variety show from 7pm.
The College KS4 and KS5 learners at Welburn Hall School have been working hard to put on the show.
The Arts Centre can be found at the Old Meeting House Court, Helmsley, YO62 5DW.
Tickets are £5 with admission for under-18s costing £3.

Northallerton Age Friendly Forum is meeting at Northallerton Library.
Run in conjunction with Age UK, it is funded with grant assistance from North Yorkshire Council and meets on the first Thursday of every month.
The events are free and are held from 10.30am to 12.30pm. Entry is via the rear of the library.

Skipton Library, High Street, Skipton, is hosting its regular Memory Café. There will be books, games, jigsaws and refreshments, for a friendly, social gathering in the reference library. Everyone is welcome.

Sights and Sounds of Ripon 2025 takes place in various venues across Ripon.
The event will open with a welcome speech from Rt Rev Anna Eltringham, the Bishop of Ripon, at Ripon Cathedral at 10am on Saturday, 8 March.
After the opening speech there will be an opportunity to explore a range of activities, performances and information stalls across key sites in Ripon including the cathedral, library, town hall and at Ripon workhouse, courthouse and police and prison museums.
Sights and Sounds is a free family-friendly day for all Ripon residents. The event is a celebration of local charities and local services, offering a chance to discover volunteering opportunities, access to advice and support, and a whole host of fun activities.

A full day sketchbook and journaling course is taking place at Yore Mill Craft Shop and Gallery, Yore Mill, Church Bank, Leyburn, DL8 3SR.

Hovingham’s Repair Café is part of the Repair Café International network and focuses on sharing skills to extend the life of items.
The event runs from 10am to 12pm at Hovingham Village Hall YO62 4LF.
Visitors can bring items which need repair to the event which is promoting re-use instead of needless waste. The volunteer team repair, free of charge, items including electrical, household, digital, jewellery, furniture, bikes and clothing. It's also a great place to meet new people and enjoy a cup of coffee and cake.

9 March
Harrogate Theatre Choir marks a 15-year association with the musicals with an event at The Crown Hotel, Harrogate.
The concert runs from 6pm to 8.30pm at the venue on Crown Place, HG1 2RZ.
Tickets are £15 with under 16s £8. This includes a complimentary glass of prosecco or non-alcoholic alternative on arrival.

9 March to 6 April
Humble Bee Farm at Flixton, YO11 3UJ, is holding lambing experiences throughout March and into April.
Events are being held on various dates throughout that period.
Visitors will be able to bottle feed or hold a lamb, visit the maternity ward to see all the expectant ewes and meet Farmer Percy and the sheep dogs, Alfie and Madge.
Pregnant women are not advised to enter the lambing area and dogs are not allowed in the lambing barn.

Ripon Cathedral is the venue for an Evening of Glam Rock. The show starts at 7.30pm.
Expect to hear the biggest hits from the likes of The Bay City Rollers, Sweet, T.Rex, Mud, Slade, Bowie, Suzi Quatro, Wizzard and many more. Tickets are priced from £20.

15 to 23 March
Scarborough Film Festival, now in its second year, brings alternative and exciting films to the town and runs in partnership with the Stephen Joseph Theatre.
This second edition will include film previews, live music, collaborations, short films, children's events and workshops.
The festival uses multiple venues around town including the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Mandy Apple, Woodend Galleries and Studies, Craft Bar and the Railway Club.
It is supported by Film Hub North with National Lottery funding on behalf of the BFI Film Audience Network and is sponsored by JW Smith & Co.
Tickets are £8 with £7 for concessions and £6 for under-30s, Stephen Joseph Theatre Circle members and NHS staff.

Clive Ashman, the author of The Mysteries of the Missing Mosaic; a Misplaced Milestone, is giving a talk in the West Wing, Malton School, Middlecave Road, YO17 7NH.
He shares his passion for Roman Britain in a vividly illustrated presentation about the remarkable people, places, crimes and artefacts which inspired the plots to his three novels set in Roman Britain.

From 22 March
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway welcomes back one of Britain’s icons from the golden age of steam, No. 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley.
Between 22 and 30 March, the steam locomotive will be in action between Pickering and Grosmont for a selection of special services.
No. 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley is a renowned member of the LNER A4 Pacific class, designed by the celebrated railway engineer, Sir Nigel Gresley.
Tickets for the Sir Nigel Gresley service are priced adults £30, children under 15 £15, and dog day tickets £3 each. Members tickets are also available at £27 for adults, and £13.50 for children under 15. Early booking is recommended.

Get ready to be bowled over by cricket legend and renowned BBC correspondent, Jonathan Agnew, at the Scarborough Spa Theatre in the resort’s South Bay.
