Maintenance to start on A170 at Sutton Bank

Work to ensure that an important section of a cross-county route remains in good condition is scheduled to begin on Sunday, 10 September.

The annual maintenance of Sutton Bank on the A170 between Helmsley and Thirsk is programmed to be completed on the following Sunday, 17 September. It will include work on the rockface to prevent rock falls.

The scale of this essential work means Sutton Bank will be closed during that period, from 7am on 10 September until 7pm on 17 September.

In addition to the maintenance, we will take this opportunity to relocate a winter weather station camera that was hit by a vehicle in March this year and repair the crash barrier. As part of a network across the county, the camera, which has been out of action since the collision, is an integral part of delivering the council’s winter service effectively.

Maintenance work on Sutton Bank

The work on Sutton Bank will ensure that it remains structurally sound and will help to reduce the need for longer closures in future. Disruption will be kept to a minimum. Road users are asked to comply with any instructions from traffic management operatives and take extra care while within the works.

A diversion will be signed. The diversion route is:

  • A19 south from Thirsk to York Ring Road;
  • east along York Ring Road to junction with A64; or
  • north on A64, joining A169 to Pickering, and back onto the A170.

Access to homes on Sutton Bank will be maintained whenever possible, but the nature of the work means there could be times when access is restricted.
