What is the Helmsley plan?
The Helmsley plan guides development in the parish of Helmsley. The plan:
- identifies and allocates land for new housing and employment
- contains other policies to guide development in Helmsley, between now and 2027
- forms part of our Ryedale development plan
We put the Helmsley plan together with the North York Moors National Park (pdf / 3 MB).
Reviewing the Helmsley plan
In 2022 we jointly subjected the Helmsley plan to a light-touch review, and at the council on 1 December 2022, it was agreed that it will continue to operate until it is superseded by at least one of the following:
- a new local plan will be prepared in conjunction with the National Park, but it will cover only the south-eastern part of the town
- a neighbourhood plan
- a new local plan covering the National Park area of the town
Work will commence on a new plan for North Yorkshire and the Ryedale plan is under review. It is not proposed that a standalone development plan document will continue to be prepared.
