Tenants and leaseholders scrutiny panel in the Selby area

The scrutiny panel allows real scrutiny of services and issues, and ensures greater transparency in how we operate.

We are looking for tenants and leaseholders to sit on a scrutiny panel which needs to be in place to assist us with improving services.

The scrutiny panel gives an independent view of processes and performance and considers improvements to services. It also reviews good practice, highlighting what is good about the organisation and what needs to change, and makes evidenced based recommendations to the our management team.

What the scrutiny panel does

The panel:

  • scrutinises the housing services we deliver to all tenants
  • gives an independent view of housing performance
  • works separately to, and independent of, all other existing tenant groups
  • highlights what the housing team do well and what they need to improve
  • reports back to tenants, service managers on recommendations to improve services and implement change
  • networks with other tenant scrutiny panels and housing organisations
  • contributes to and supports the annual report to tenants

Previous scrutiny reviews

In the last the few years, the scrutiny panel has completed the scrutiny reviews into repairs and void properties. As a result, these scrutiny panel recommendations have been implemented:

  • introduction of a repair satisfaction survey
  • development of publicising through the Open Door tenant newsletter, and social media, such as Facebook and Twitter
  • re-introduction of the tenant handbook
  • introduction of the lettable standard for empty properties
  • introduction of pre-tenancy inspections
  • introduction of disclaimers for left items by previous tenant

Joining the panel to make a difference

Individuals on the panel are expected to work on their own initiative, doing their own research, assessing services against key performance indicators and attending meetings with other panel members and with our officers.

You need to be able to work independently and as part of a team, understand and analyse reports and information, have excellent verbal communication skills, express views clearly and effectively in a formal meeting setting, making reasoned contributions and be able to challenge constructively, while respecting the roles, views and feelings of others.

Applicants for the panel would have their skills assessed against a set criteria, and would then be invited to discuss the process.
