Ageing well in North Yorkshire photography competition

What comes to mind when you think about images of older people? Is it wrinkly hands or active elders? Frailty or full of life?

We know that images in the media often portray older people as being frail, using walking aids, being in medical or care settings, losing independence and with wrinkly hands.

Let’s challenge this perception - can you help us?

We are looking to capture and showcase positive images of people ageing well across North Yorkshire through a new photography competition.

The competition is open to photographers of any age or ability, and photographs submitted could be shown in a new photography exhibition planned to help celebrate International Day of Older People in October, as well as our associated ageing well publicity work and publications including our public health annual report.

There is also a chance to win a competition prize where entries will be judged with £100 cash awarded for first prize, £75 cash for second prize and £50 cash for third prize.

Photographs entered should show older people taking part in a range of day-to-day activities. This could include (but is not limited to):

  • taking part in or leading activities, hobbies, classes, and so on
  • shopping, visiting museums and other North Yorkshire attractions
  • using public transport, driving
  • walking, cycling, gardening, taking part in sports and other activities
  • using aids / adaptations for example, mobility scooter, wheelchair, home adaptations
  • at work
  • volunteering
  • caring for family members for example, grandchildren and other relatives
  • tackling climate change
  • using technology

We also welcome images showing a range of ages and representing different characteristics including gender, race and ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, geography and more.

Competition now closed

The competition has now closed. We will share details of the outcome and a planned photo exhibition soon.

Although the competition has closed, we are still interested in receiving images to celebrate healthy ageing. If you are happy for your photos to be used in our future publications please ensure you have the relevant permissions from people included in the photo and send these to agefriendly@northyorks.gov.uk.

Please make sure that the photos:

  • are 300dpi or more (if sending via a phone choose “actual/large size”)
  • are ideally 2MB or more (a phone often asks you about size – choose actual or large)
  • have written consent from any people in the photograph (who can be recognised) that we can use their photograph
  • are in JPEG format
  • are supplied with contact details for photograph records (at least name and email)

Other information

Alternatively, if you know any groups/activities taking place where you would be willing for us to come and take photos that could be used in our collection of positive images and the photography exhibition please let us know at agefriendly@northyorks.gov.uk or phone 01609 536910.
