Otago

We also offer Otago. This is a twelve-week strength and balance exercise programme that can help to reduce falls in frailer older people. You need to be referred to this programme by our Ageing Well advisors. Contact us to find out more.

Healthy lifestyle referral

Our healthy lifestyle referral scheme is a three month, reduced cost supported programme that can be accessed by referral from your doctor.

Our specially trained instructors will support you to manage your health condition through a personal exercise plan and an agreed level of support. This includes:

  • one-to-one support
  • access to unlimited fitness
  • access to other support services

Who is this for?

Our referral service is for anyone who is living with a health condition that could be maintained or improved by an increase in activity and movement.

We are not a rehabilitation centre as this requires more specialised care but our instructors are trained to support you move more should your medical practitioner prescribe exercise.

How do I get referred?

The referral must come from your doctor. Ask them if exercise on prescription is suitable for you.

Other support services

You will also have access to wider support, including:

  • befriending
  • counselling
  • employability
  • confidence building
  • benefits advice
  • household energy advice
  • peer support
  • English and maths education
  • disability support
  • digital support
  • coping with loss and bereavement

Walking and running

Our inspired outdoors programme aims to empower you to improve your physical, mental and social health and wellbeing through getting into walking or running and experiencing the natural benefit the Selby area offers.

Community walks

We work with Selby Town Primary Care Network to offer four walks every week.

Enjoy the beauty of Selby and come along to one of our walks that take place throughout the week. The walks are a great opportunity to enjoy the open air, have fun and get in some gentle exercise.

There is no need to book, simply turn up at any of the locations to take part.

Each session is accessible to everyone, although if you are under 16 you will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Well behaved dogs are welcome too but must be kept on a lead at all times. If you require support or a care worker, please feel free to bring them along.

Walks talk place from Selby Leisure and Wellbeing Hub on:

  • Tuesday from 1pm until 2pm
  • Wednesday from 10am until 11am
  • Friday from 10:30am until 11:30am
  • Saturday from 10:30am until 11:30am

Contact us if you need any further information about these sessions.

Couch to 5k

Looking to start running but struggling with your fitness and confidence? The Couch to 5k programme might be just the thing for you. We work with Selby Striders to offer a Couch to 5k programme in the spring and summer months.

The 10-week programme includes two sessions per week led by England Athletics qualified coaches.

The goal is to complete Selby Park Run as a group with the friends that you will make along the way. You will receive second-to-none support and even opportunities to progress once the course has ended.

To sign up please email couch@selbystriders.org.uk or sign up on the Selby Striders Facebook page here.
