What is Healthy You?

Healthy You is designed to support you or you and your family to help you meet your lifestyle goals, which might be to be more active, eat better, or manage your weight.

For individuals, families, children and adults, Healthy You is provided for free by Active North Yorkshire, our sport and active wellbeing service.

A team of friendly, qualified Healthy You advisors will be there every step of the way through a combination of options, including one-to-one, group, online, telephone and face-to-face support.

Advisors will support you to set personalised goals to help you make positive changes to your health and wellbeing.

Following an initial programme of support for up to three months, we will keep in touch with you for up to a year to help you maintain your lifestyle changes.

Who can access Healthy You?

You are eligible to access Healthy You if you are actively thinking about making lifestyle changes and are either:

  • an adult with a body mass index (BMI) equal to or greater than 30 (or equal or greater than 25 if you are from a black or minority ethnic group or have a condition such as Type 2 diabetes, heart disease or hypertension)
  • a child aged four or above at or above the 91st centile for BMI - exceptions will be made for children and young people with no centile or BMI measure available

You can calculate your BMI on the NHS Choices website.

If you are still not sure how to work out your BMI or you have any of the health conditions mentioned above, your GP or other health care professional will be able to give you advice on the service.

If you are an adult or family not yet resident or registered with a GP practice or school, we will assess you on a case by case basis for suitability for referral.

If you are not eligible to use the service, you can still find information on how to make changes to improve your health on the NHS Better Health website.

How can I make sure I am eating healthily?

Healthy eating can help improve your digestion, increase your sense of wellbeing and reduce the risk of illness.

The key to eating well is having the correct proportions of a variety of foods for a balanced diet, in line with the Eatwell Guide on the NHS website

You can find advice about eating well on the NHS website which includes information about different food groups we should include in our diet and in what proportions.

The free food scanner app Food Facts can scan your food labels and tell you how much added sugar is in the food you are buying, to help you decide what food choices to make.

How can I make sure I am active enough?

Being active is wonderful for your physical and mental health and wellbeing. Moving more can reduce your risk of ill health, keep your body strong and your mind alert. For some it can be a great way to meet people. Find something that you enjoy and be active every day.
