This privacy notice is designed to help you understand how and why we process your personal data in relation to children and young people who are leaving our care. This notice should be read in conjunction with our corporate privacy notice.
Who are we?
North Yorkshire Council is a ‘data controller’ as defined by Article 4(7) of the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR). The leaving care service collect and process data in order to provide services and support to children and young people leaving care. We usually provide support up until the age of 21, or 25 if the young person is in education or training or if they request support.
We have appointed Veritau Ltd to be our Data Protection Officer.

What personal information do we collect?
In order to deliver our leaving care service we will need to collect both personal and special category data, specifically:
- personal data collected:
- personal information (for example, name, date of birth, address, contact details)
- NHS number
- family and relationship details
- referral, assessment and care plan
- employment details
- housing needs
Special category data collected:
- physical/mental details
- medical history
- criminal history
- race and ethnicity
- religion
- social care outcomes
- immigration status
Why do we collect your personal information?
We need to collect this information for the following purposes:
- providing support to children and young people leaving care
- safeguarding children and young people
- assessing care leavers needs and preparation of a pathway plan
- provision of an independent advocacy service
- assistance with accommodation after leaving care
- service improvement
Who do we share this information with?
In the course of performing our duties, we may share your information with a number of agencies who are key to delivering our service.

- other local authorities
- police
- employment agencies

- probation services
- housing authorities
How long do we keep your information for?
We only retain your personal data for as long as is necessary to provide services to you, and in line with our record retention and disposal schedule. The following table details the retention period for records relating to this service:
