State education for your children while you're in North Yorkshire
On behalf of North Yorkshire Council, we would like to welcome you and your family to North Yorkshire.
All children in England between the ages of five and 16 are entitled to a free place at a state school - in fact they have to go to school. This is why is it called 'compulsory school age.'

- apply for school places in North Yorkshire online
- the North Yorkshire Council School Admissions and Appeals Team will endeavour to process your applications for school places as soon as possible after your arrival
- while you are waiting to hear about school places, we recommend that you fill in a Pupil Information Form for each of your children - this will help the schools to know more about your child, including school and medical information, and their sizes so that school uniforms can be ordered
- once you receive an email letting you know which school(s) your children have been allocated, it is important to contact the school to arrange a welcome meeting so you can visit the school and meet some of the staff who will be working with your child(ren)
- it may be helpful for your host to join you at the welcome meeting, to help you to find the best route to get to the school
- if you will also need an interpreter for the welcome meeting, please let your host and the school know as soon as possible
- the welcome meeting will be a good chance for you to see the school and to tell the staff about your children
- remember to take your Pupil Information Forms
Please let the school know if:
- your child has any medical conditions, medications or allergies
- your child follows a particular diet such as vegetarian or Halal
- your phone number in case the school needs to get in touch (you can ask them to text if it's easier for you to understand)
Make sure you find out:
- the school start and finish times
- where you need to drop off and collect your child
- the date when your child will start school
Once your children are allocated school places, and a start date has been agreed, it is your legal responsibility to ensure that they attend school every day.
Transport to schools
As in most areas of the UK, assistance with home to school transport can be provided by North Yorkshire Council for primary aged children under eight years old if the journey to school is two miles or more.
For secondary aged children and primary children over eight years old, transport will be provided if the journey is three miles or more.
For shorter journeys, parents are expected to take their children to school every day.
If you are medically not fit to take your children to school
If there is a medical reason why you are unable to take your children to the schools allocated, you need to provide written evidence of a serious, long term medical condition, so that a request for transport can be considered.
