A travelling library which serves rural communities across North Yorkshire is adding another stop to its busy schedule.
Residents in Fairburn, near Sherburn in Elmet, can now access the county’s vast library collection on their doorstep when the touring vehicle makes its monthly stop.
Our supermobile library carries about 3,000 items of stock, including books, DVDs, and audiobooks.
The library visited Fairburn for the first time yesterday (Tuesday, 28 January), and will stop in the village outside of the community centre on North Road.
Executive member for libraries, Cllr Simon Myers, said: “Our supermobile library is treasured by so many rural communities who want to access resources.
“It provides a lifeline to many residents who have difficulty travelling to the nearest library branch.
“Our aim is to provide easy access to as many residents as possible, and I would encourage villagers to visit the vehicle and explore the extensive collection.”
The supermobile library issues more than 1,500 books and is visited about 420 times every month.
Cllr Tim Grogan, who represents the Monk Fryston and South Milford division, added: “This is good news for the residents of Fairburn and I am delighted to be associated with the return of this service.
“I strongly believe that libraries are essential in a process of giving people access to knowledge, and I remember once reading that they store the energy that fuels the imagination and contribute to improving our quality of life.”
