Right to make improvements and alterations
This right only applies to secure and flexible tenancies (sole and joint). It does not apply to introductory tenancies.
You may wish to carry out improvements to your home at your own expense, such as erecting a shed in your garden.
Permission
Before carrying out any improvements, you must contact us stating what improvements you wish to make. Once we have reviewed your request, we will contact you to let you know whether we can give you permission or not.
Examples of the activities you must get permission to carry out include:
- installing laminate flooring
- fitting satellite dishes
- putting a garage, greenhouse or shed in the garden
- removing, changing or replacing any walls and fences
- decorating the outside of your house
- cutting down or removing any tree or hedge
- building a patio, hard standing or driveway
- fitting a new kitchen or bathroom
- allowing people to stay at your property longer than four weeks
- subletting part, or the whole, of your property
- keeping any pets or animals (we will take into consideration the type of property you live in)
- running a business from your home
Adaptations
If you are having difficulty managing in your home because of illness or disability, we may be able carry out adaptations to help you live life as fully and independently as possible.
Adaptations can include fitting small items such as grab rails or an additional stair rail, or larger items such as showers and door ramps.
Most requests for adaptations will require an occupational therapist to visit you, make a professional assessment of your needs and recommend the most appropriate adaptation.
Contact us to have a discussion about possible adaptations.
