Moving in and out expectations in Selby

Find out about the standards you can expect when you move into housing in the Selby area and what you need to do when you move out.

Lettable standard

Our lettable standard sets out what to expect when you rent a property from us. You can read the lettable standard here

All our properties should be clean, safe, secure and in a good state of repair when you move in accordance with the standard.

Terminating your tenancy

To end your tenancy, you need to  give your notice to terminate using this template (pdf / 73 KB).

You must give at least four weeks written notice before you want to leave the property and the notice time you give must end on a Sunday.

Where ending a tenancy is due to the death of a tenant, tenants going into care or tenants transferring to a North Yorkshire Home Choice partner landlord, only one week’s written notice is required.

Once you have submitted your notice to terminate, you will be contacted by your neighbourhood officer to arrange a pre-termination visit, which will give you the opportunity to ask any questions before moving out and find out what we expect.

To avoid an additional week’s rent after moving out, you must return all keys associated with the property to us by 12pm (midday) on the Monday immediately after your notice period ends.

You can find out about North Yorkshire Home Choice partner landlords and housing associations on the North Yorkshire Home Choice website.

Moving out standard

There are some tasks we need you to do to meet our moving out standard. This helps us to get the property ready for the next tenant.

Clear the property

Under the terms of your tenancy you must clear all personal belongings and rubbish from your property and garden. Check the loft, cupboards, shed, under the stairs and garden.

Do not just leave something if you do not want it. We will charge you for clearing it.

Rubbish

You can take rubbish and unwanted items to one of our household waste recycling centres.

Unwanted furniture

Various local organisations welcome donations of unwanted furniture. Donating to charity shops is a great way of reducing waste going to landfill. You can also use the Freecycle website or Facebook marketplace to advertise your unwanted furniture to others.

Bulky waste

Our bulky waste service offers a collection of up to five bulky items for a fixed price.

Clean the property

Have a good clean up, especially in the bathroom and kitchen, which get the most wear and tear. This includes:

  • kitchen units (inside and outside)
  • hob, oven or cooker
  • bath, sinks and toilet

Vacuum or sweep and mop floors as appropriate.

Leave the property clean and how you would like to find it. This will help another family move in as quickly as possible.

Make sure your garden and / or yard is well maintained and left tidy with any trees or hedges pruned and the grass cut.

Repairs

Contact us so we can arrange to deal with any repairs we are responsible for before you move out.

If you have broken or damaged anything, you will need to repair it yourself. If we have to carry out the repair after you have moved out, we will charge you for it.

Visit our repairs page to find out what we and you are responsible for.

Remove unauthorised DIY

Unauthorised DIY must be put back to its original condition. You may only leave behind things we have agreed at your pre-termination visit.

Any charges incurred may prevent you from being rehoused in future.
