Harrogate housing standards: equality and diversity

The council seeks to promote and communicate equality and diversity both within the council and local community. We realise that this is a vital part of the success of our activities. 

We will:

  1. Actively work to create close relationships with people from minority and disadvantaged groups.
  2. Seek to maximise the extent to which our customers benefit from our service according to their individual needs. In doing this we will take account of people's protected characteristics, for example, their age, disability, gender reassignment, pregnancy and maternity, race (national origins, colour and nationality), religion or belief, sex. 
  3. Monitor and record all applications for housing by age, disability, gender reassignment, pregnancy and maternity, race (national origins, colour and nationality), religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation and ensure sensitive information is treated as confidential under the Data Protection Act 1988. 
  4. Make sure that offices are accessible to all customers. 
  5. Not tolerate harassment or intimidation and hate crimes of any kind. We will respond proactively and promptly to all reports of harassment / intimidation. 
  6. Ensure all employees, agents and contractors are committed to equality and understand the needs of all our customers and the barriers that they may face due to their equality characteristics. 
  7. Provide interpreting services to customers whose first language is not English to allow them to access our services.
  8. Provide translations, tapes, Braille and large print leaflets on request.
