Empty properties can cause problems such as property deterioration, vandalism, and increased costs for owners. We encourage owners to bring empty properties back into use in several ways.
Collaboration with property owners and organisations
We give advice and support to bring empty properties back into use.
Inspections
We carry out inspections to determine the condition of empty properties and their compliance with relevant legislation and standards.
Enforcement actions
We use enforcement actions where appropriate, especially in cases with hazards or significant issues.
Partnerships
We work with agencies such as our Community Safety team, North Yorkshire Police, the Fire and Rescue Service, and our social care teams to ensure a joined-up approach.
Report concerns about an empty property
If you have concerns about an empty property posing a hazard to the community, email the address of the property to privatehousingstandards@northyorks.gov.uk. Include photographs if possible.
