Supported housing provides accommodation as well as support, supervision or care to help people with a wide range of needs live independently.
Supported housing options
We offer four different supported housing options:
Short term accommodation with support provided
This type of accommodation helps people to go back to living independently within their community after needing short-term support to improve their life, such as those:
- who have experienced homelessness
- recovering from substance (drug / alcohol) use
- with experience of the criminal justice system
- with mental health issues
We provide people with:
- fixed term accommodation in the community or floating support in their existing housing
- support for managing their relationship with their landlord
- support with independent living skills, as well as looking at their care and support needs
- support to help them move to general needs housing which may or may not provide support
This accommodation is based in the community and doesn’t usually feature any significant adaptations.
Supported living housing
This provides people with a home of their own that they are supported to live in on a longer term basis. They are usually for people who have complex health or mental health issues, such as a learning disability or autism. Support includes:
- housing related support such as living skills, tenancy skills
- a support team who are available for a large of amount of time to meet a person’s care and support needs
There are over 200 supported living properties in North Yorkshire including:
- shared housing – with each person having their own tenancy
- self-contained housing – these consist of individual apartments with shared communal space
- self-contained housing with access to off-site support
Properties can be specially adapted for those living there to meet their care needs.
Extra care accommodation
This offers secure self-contained accommodation, usually on a long-term basis, for older adults who require various levels of care and support.
Care and support services are provided on site 24 hours a day, seven days a week, along with other facilities such as a restaurant, hairdresser and shops.
There are currently 28 extra care schemes across North Yorkshire that provide 1,540 accommodation units. These schemes provide a combination of rented, shared ownership and privately owned units. For those paying rent, this is paid separately to their care costs.
Further details can be found on our extra care housing schemes page.
Support provided in a carer’s home - Shared Lives
Our Shared Lives service matches an adult or young person who has long-term support needs with a host family. The family then supports the person in their own home, either through regular day visits, day and overnight visits, or the person may move into the family home.
The host family, known as Shared Lives carers, have different life experiences and backgrounds. The scheme provides training and ongoing support to carers.

Paying for supported housing
There is a cost for using these services.
You may be eligible for financial support from us to help pay for your care. How much support you receive will depend on the amount of savings and / or financial assets that you have. You will therefore need to complete a financial assessment.
