Frequently asked questions about the change from Brimhams Active to Active North Yorkshire
From Sunday 1 December, the management of leisure and wellbeing services currently run by Brimhams Active will transfer to our sport and active wellbeing service, Active North Yorkshire.
The transfer is part of a plan to bring all leisure and wellbeing provision across North Yorkshire into one single in-house service model by 2027. Active North Yorkshire aims to support more people to be active with an increased focus on improving the physical and mental health and wellbeing of the county's communities.
The transfer will affect the following sites currently operated by Brimhams Active:
- the leisure and wellness centres:
- Harrogate
- Knaresborough
- Nidderdale
- Ripon (Jack Laugher)
- Starbeck Baths
- the wellbeing hubs:
- Fairfax
- Jennyfield Styan
- Stockwell
- Turkish Baths Harrogate
- Little Explorers Day Nursery
As a customer of these sites, there are a few things you will need to know about the changeover. We have created a set of frequently asked questions to answer your queries and highlight how you may be affected.

General information
Will I be able to visit Brimhams Active sites as normal from 1 December?
Will there be any disruption to service?
As with any major changes, a certain level of disruption can be expected. We are working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure any disruption is kept to an absolute minimum. We will keep customers updated frequently on any anticipated disruption.
What will the council be doing to maintain the best value for money during the transfer to Active North Yorkshire?
The transfer to Active North Yorkshire will be conducted in the most cost-effective way possible, ensuring all legal obligations are met and customer safety is prioritised.
Will my Brimhams Active app still work?
Your current Brimhams Active app will be functional until 1 December. We have set up a new Active North Yorkshire app for customers which you can download and use now.
Can I still book classes and swim sessions?
Yes, you can continue to book classes as normal. You will be able to login with the email address and password you currently use for the Brimhams Active site/app to view all existing bookings on the new app and website.
Will all the sites opening hours remain the same?
Yes. There are no plans to change the opening times.
Will the names of the facilities change?
Yes to bring consistency across the centres in the new service they will be known as the following:

Does the change of management affect the people who work there?
No, all the same, familiar faces who have served you previously will be available at the sites. You may notice a change to staff uniforms in line with the move to Active North Yorkshire.
Will I still be able to access my centre or hub in the same way?
Yes, you will be able to access it in the normal way.
Will the free Wi-Fi connection change in my centre or hub?
Yes, the connection will change, but you will still be able to enjoy free WiFi at all sites.
What will happen to my data when Brimhams Active transfers to Active North Yorkshire/North Yorkshire Council?
If you are a member or a customer of Brimhams Active, any of your personal data held by Brimhams Active will transfer to Active North Yorkshire on 1 December 2024. This includes any data held about your child if your child accesses services provided by Brimhams Active, for example swimming lessons, Little Explorers Nursery. As Active North Yorkshire is part of North Yorkshire Council, the council will become the new data controller of your data which means that they are responsible for complying with the UK GDPR in relation to your personal data. The council will ensure that the transfer of your data is handled safely and securely.
How will my data be used?
We will use your data to manage their relationship with you as a member or customer. We also need to have a lawful basis to process your data, along with ensuring that as a data subject, you are told of your rights in relation to your data. Will my data be secure?
The council will ensure that when your data is transferred it is done safely and securely. Once your data is transferred the council need to ensure they put measures in place to protect the personal data that they hold safe from loss, corruption or theft. There are several ways they do this, including:
- training for all staff and elected councillors on how to handle personal data;
- policies and procedures detailing what council officers can and can not do with personal data
- IT security safeguards such as firewalls, encryption, and anti-virus software
- on-site security safeguards to protect physical files and electronic equipment
What if I don't want my data transferred?

Will there be any changes to my membership?
No, your membership will remain unchanged allowing you to enjoy all the same great benefits.
Will my direct debit change?
Your direct debit will automatically be transferred from Brimhams Active to North Yorkshire Council. You do not need to take any action. Please do not cancel your direct debit. The date your direct debit will be collected and the amount charged will not change. However, you will notice the name that appears on your statement will change from ‘BRIMHAMS ACTIVE LT’ to ‘N Yorks Council 44’ for collections after 30 November 2024.
We will be contacting customers who pay via direct debit by email in November with further information.
I am a member - will there be anything I need to do when my centre or hub moves to Active North Yorkshire?

Non-members (casual users)
I am a non-member - what do I need to do?
App: Your current Brimhams Active app will be functional until 1 December. North Yorkshire Council has set up a new Active North Yorkshire app for customers. Website: There is a new Active North Yorkshire website which our venues will be added to.

Swimming lessons
Will my or my child’s swimming lessons change?
No, there are no changes planned for swimming lessons. These will be delivered at the current stage, day and time you or your child is in.
Will the way I pay for swimming lessons change?
Your direct debit will automatically be transferred from Brimhams Active to North Yorkshire Council. You do not need to take any action. Please do not cancel your direct debit. Will the price of swimming lessons be changing?
Prices will be held at the current rates until the annual review point in March 2025. Any changes to pricing will be communicated in advance of 1 April 2025.
Will access to my child’s online progress portal change?
We are working on this at the moment, and we will update you before 1 December.
How will I be able to open the barrier for swimming lessons?
We are creating a new swimming lesson card which you will need to collect from reception after 1 December.
Other information
I want to follow my centre on social media?
The following Brimhams Active Facebook page and LinkedIn page will close on Sunday 1 December. However, customers can stay up to date on all Active North Yorkshire news on social media by following your local centres and/or hubs. Please see links below:

Will things like timetables, sessions, and products change?
The current timetable and service delivery will carry on as normal. Services will continue to be reviewed regularly in line with demand and customer feedback.
Turkish Baths Harrogate customers
Will anything change at the Turkish Baths Harrogate?
No, there are no planned changes at the Turkish Baths. Customers can expect to receive the same fantastic service.
Little Explorers Day Nursery customers
Will anything change at the Little Explorers Day Nursery?
