Accessing archaeological and historic environment information

Details about how we record information about historic sites and monuments, known as the historic environment record.

The North Yorkshire historic environment record is a system for recording information about historic sites and monuments, such as archaeological sites and finds, designated sites, historic landscapes and buildings and other landscape features.

It includes a computerised index system, as well as hard copy detailed information on maps, photographs, reports, journals and other files. The information can be used for research, to assess development proposals and to manage and enhance North Yorkshire's historic environment and landscape.

The North Yorkshire historic environment record covers the administrative area of North Yorkshire Council, and does not cover the areas of the City of York, North York Moors National Park Authority or Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority. Contact details for all historic environment records across England can be found online from the Heritage Gateway website.

Frequently asked questions

Is the historic environment record online?

Yes, our monument records can be viewed online via the Heritage Gateway website.

These records are a copy of our main database, so they may not be as up to date as the version we use in the office. We aim to update the data on the Heritage Gateway approximately every six months, so do keep revisiting the website.

For development management purposes, we advise you to request up-to-date data from us using our commercial data request form above. In addition to digital historic environment record data, we also have a large collection of hard copy material which may not be indexed in our database, access to which may be arranged via appointment at our offices by contacting the historic environment team.

For general research enquiries, data may be requested from the historic environment record using the non-commercial enquiry form above.

There are other existing online resources about archaeology which are listed in the historic environment record user guide above, although these should not be seen as a substitute for consulting the historic environment record.
