General elections

Information about the general election on 4 July.

A general election is used to vote for Members of Parliament (MP) to represent all areas of the UK in the House of Commons, at the UK Parliament in Westminster, London.

The UK is split into constituencies, and each constituency votes for an MP to represent them, using the first past the post system.

Results for the General Election held 4 July 2024

Harrogate and Knaresborough

Tom Gordon (Liberal Democrat) was elected as the MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, the turnout was 66.95%:

Richmond and Northallerton

Rishi Sunak (Conservative) was elected as the MP for Richmond and Northallerton, the turnout was 65.8%:

Scarborough and Whitby

Alison Hume (Labour) was elected as the MP for Scarborough and Whitby, the turnout was 59.5%:

Selby

Keir Mather (Labour) was elected as the MP for Selby, the turnout was 63.27%:

Skipton and Ripon

Julian Smith (Conservative) was elected as the MP for Skipton and Ripon, the turnout was 67.69%:

Thirsk and Malton

Kevin Hollinrake (Conservative) was elected as the MP for Thirsk and Malton, the turnout was 63.71%:

Wetherby and Easingwold

Alec Shelbrooke (Conservative) was elected as the MP for the Wetherby and Easingwold, the turnout was 70.56%:

New constituency boundaries

The constituency boundaries changed at the last Parliamentary election due to changes approved by the government. You can find out more about the boundary review on the Parliament website.

Due to these changes, there are now seven constituencies within the North Yorkshire area:

  • Harrogate and Knaresborough
  • Richmond and Northallerton
  • Scarborough and Whitby
  • Selby
  • Skipton and Ripon
  • Thirsk and Malton
  • Wetherby and Easingwold
